Did you know that Ocracoke Island was a favorite haunt of Edward Teach, the feared "Blackbeard" the Pirate? 
Not hard to see why.
Today, the beaches are protected, all National Seashore, unspoiled beauty.
The sunsets and the stars are amazing.
Course so are the marsh mosquitoes.
If you bring or rent a 4x4 you can
get to some good shelling areas.
You don't need your car to get around. It's bicycle or the old "shoe leather express".
There are shops, nough said.
and there are cats, 
cats and more cats...
Anywhere you have to take a ferry to get to somewhere else is cool, 
just say'n.
